Knee pain and staying active

Knee pain can come from overuse, an old injury or gradual joint wear. Complete rest often makes knees stiffer; gentle, regular movement usually helps them feel better.
Ideas to discuss with your physiotherapist
- Walking on flat ground at a comfortable pace
- Strengthening the thigh muscles that support the knee
- Avoiding long periods of deep squatting if it aggravates pain
- Supportive footwear
Swelling that appears suddenly, a knee that gives way or locks, or pain after a fall should be checked by a clinician.
